Solid waste management design has been done for municipal and industrial clients including an industrial paper mill landfill, District of Chester and Halifax Regional Municipality. These designs have included design of liners, leachate collection and management systems, cover design, landfill gas management and utilization systems.

Landfill modeling and detailed cost estimates were completed for a range of landfill disposal volumes for Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour to assist in the assessment of the cost of upgrading existing landfills in Nova Scotia to second generation regulatory requirements. A similar exercise was completed for the Department of Environment of Newfoundland and Labrador.

ABL designed the gas collection and utilization system for the Highway 101 Landfill closure. Evaluations of leachate treatment systems have been done for Little Forks Regional Landfill and Lincolnville Landfill. ABL staff have experience in application of physical/chemical treatment, anaerobic hybrid reactor treatment and aerobic treatment of landfill leachate. Our staff were among the first in North America to use anaerobic high rate treatment for landfill leachate.
