ABL employs certified water and wastewater treatment plant operators. Our combination of
process design expertise and hands-on operating experience answers the demand for specialized
services in conducting plant audits, commissioning and troubleshooting. Operational services
are supported by an in-house laboratory capability for testing regulatory and operational control
parameters and microscopy. Laboratory services are closely linked with our benchscale and pilot
plant operations. ABL offers services in: | ||

Contract Operations | ||
|---|---|---|---|
ABL can provide full or part time certified operators either on an ongoing or temporary basis. ABL will assume direct responsible charge of operations in support of a client's existing staff during the interim until training is complete and staff certification has been received. ABL has provided this service in a number of instances, for clients such as Michelin North America. ABL currently operates three wastewater treatment plants in the metro Halifax area, including a commercial mall SBR and an apartment complex greenhouse treatment system. |

| Operator Training | |||
ABL has prepared detailed Operational Procedures Manuals and undertaken operator training to meet individual client needs. Training has been provided to operators of several industrial and municipal wastewater plants in the Maritimes, such as at Digby, Keltic Lodge, Brudenell Resort, ABT Co. (Canexel), Michelin Granton, Greenwood, Avonport, Pictou County and elsewhere. Water treatment training has been provided in Stewiacke, Bathurst, Sherbrooke, and Orangedale, for example. | |||
| Plant Audits | |||
ABL conducts plant audits based on the USEPA composite correction program methodology. Audits attempt to identify both the process limitations and the optimum operation of a plant. Once these factors have been identified, the goal of implementation is to optimize plant utilization by improving plant performance with minimal investment. In many cases significant performance enhancements can be achieved and upgrading costs can be reduced. Wastewater treatment plant audits have been conducted for Annapolis County (Nictaux STP), Pictou County, Village of Baddeck, Caledonia, Digby, and others. Water plant audits have been conducted for Mahone Bay and the City of Bathurst. ABL was retained by the Province of Nova Scotia in 1995 to conduct a province-wide needs assessment, auditing all existing water and wastewater treatment plants. | |||
| Plant Commissioning | |||
ABL, with combined operational and PLC control experience, has the expertise to commission both our own plants and those of others. Wastewater treatment plants have been commissioned at Nictaux, the Brudenell Resort, Keltic Lodge, for a commercial mall and industrial clients. Water treatment plants have been commissioned, for example, in Sherbrooke, Stewiacke and Orangedale. | |||
| Treatability Studies | |||
ABL designs and carries out treatability studies for new and existing plants to optimize process performance, and to test the applicability of a selected process. Treatability studies are done at the bench and pilot scales, and ABL can supply pilot plant facilities or design them for the client. | |||
| Laboratory Services | |||
Laboratory Services are provided to support our operational and treatability study services. Our lab is fully equipped to perform BOD, COD, SS, and other routine tests related to operation of water and wastewater treatment plants. Hach methods are performed using a DR-2000 spectrophotometer. Our lab developed to ensure valid results reflecting the true conditions of the sample. | |||
| Flow Monitoring Services | |||
ABL owns flow meters and samplers which can be rented and deployed to determine the load to a plant. These are used to develop realistic scenarios for plant upgrades and troubleshooting. Flow monitoring studies have been done in many communities including Cape Sable Island, Barrington, Baddeck, Liverpool, Lunenburg, City of Miramichi, and others. |
