Arichat Water Treatability Pilot Study
Arichat, Nova Scotia

In October and November 2001, ABL, in conjunction with Rawdon Technologies conducted a two-week pilot study employing the Rawdon Technologies mobile Dissolved Air Flotation pilot plant. The raw water source is a small lake forming part of a watershed comprised of numerous bogs. These bogs and underlying terrain contribute to organic colour in the water. The lake is relatively shallow and is reported to be prone to high turbidity events during high winds. The existing water treatment plant consisted of manganese greensand filters and chlorination equipment. While the plant provided some treatment for turbidity, the organic colour was not removed. During the pilot testing program conducted in Arichat at the municipal treatment plant it was found that DAF or similar high rate clarification processes with multimedia filtration including membrane filtration would be applicable for this water source.
