Village of Baddeck, located on the Bras d'Or Lakes of Cape Breton, required replacement of their existing treatment plant. Implementation of an ABL-SBR in Baddeck allowed for a considerable budget reduction as compared to alternative technologies. With an average flow of 360,000 USpgd (1,360 m3/d) and an instantaneous peak flow of 1.7 MGD (6,360 m3/d), provision had to be made to accommodate a large change in flow while maintaining effluent quality. In addition, nuisance plankton blooms were previously reported in the adjacent receiving water as a result of high nutrient loading from the existing plant, nitrogen in particular. The ABL-SBR is capable of removing approximately 70% nitrogen without addition of chemical aids.
The plant, commissioned in May 2003, was completed on budget and includes on-site sludge digestion and dewatering. Total project value: $2 million.
