| Commercial Mall Sequencing Batch Reactor Tantallon, Nova Scotia |
|---|
|
A large commercial strip mall complex in Tantallon, Nova Scotia had ongoing sewage treatment problems until ABL provided a solution with the ABL-SBR. Since the development had been built in the early 1990's, the on-site disposal system (infiltration beds) had twice failed entirely. After the second system failure in 1998, all wastewater from the development had to be hauled away by truck for disposal, a very costly undertaking. The mall owners needed the problem solved quickly, and had their consultant investigate alternatives for wastewater treatment that would be more reliable than infiltration beds. The consultant recommended the ABL-SBR. ABL completed design and obtained all required environmental approvals within four weeks of contract award, and the treatment plant was completed and commissioned in nine weeks of construction. ABL acted as prime contractor on this design build project. The ABL-SBR installed, rated at 20,000 GPD for high strength wastewater, has consistently been producing effluent with less than 10 mg/l BOD and SS. After UV disinfection, effluent is discharged to maintain a fire reservoir in full condition. The enclosed SBR and fenced reservoir are located in a woodland setting off to one side of the mall. The project was completed in September of 1998, and ABL operators have continued to provide contract operating services since the plant was commissioned. |
