Eastern Passage Sewage Treatment Plant, one of the largest STP's in the Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, treats 3.9 MGD of wastewater. Most of the sewage is delivered through a long forcemain which, during seasonal low flow conditions, generates hydrogen sulphide gas. This gas is odourous and toxic and had, on occasion, been recorded at levels in excess of 50 ppm in the headworks. The existing wet scrubbers were clearly not meeting requirements. Concern for workers and residents prompted a study on how best to deal with the problem. ABL developed a program of containment to reduce air flows and to minimize worker exposure. Other areas of the plant such as the clarifier covers, which previously had no odour control systems, were added to the containment system. As a result of the containment program, the existing wet scrubbers could be reused as the primary stage to serve the existing and expanded odour control system. ABL designed an additional scrubber shell, shown here, for local fabrication, which resulted in a savings of over $40,000. This allowed the project to be completed within the budget of approximately $250,000. No further odour complaints have been received. | |
