Greenwood Sewage Treatment Plant
Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia

In 1996 ABL designed this extended aeration tertiary treatment plant, the largest facility of its kind in Atlantic Canada, which receives sewage from the Village of Greenwood and a Canadian Forces Base (CFB Greenwood) in Kings County, Nova Scotia. The plant was designed for a peak flow of 1.6 MGD. Influent is pretreated by grit removal and grinding. The plant biological process is extended aeration activated sludge with two aeration basins and two circular clarifiers. Waste sludge is aerobically digested and dewatered. The effluent is filtered, disinfected and discharged to the Fales River, which experiences low flows each summer.

Previously, overloaded treatment facilities had caused water quality problems in the Fales River and Annapolis River and the highest level of effluent treatment was therefore a requirement. Effluent standards for the new plant are 5/5 mg/l BOD and SS. ABL conducted workshops for operator training and delivered detailed Operational Procedures Manuals. Operator support is provided as required on an ongoing basis. The project value was approximately $3 million, as completed in the summer of 1997.
