Keltic Lodge Sequencing Batch Reactor
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

Keltic Lodge, one of Nova Scotia's premiere resorts, is located in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park overlooking picturesque Ingonish Beach. At a cost of approximately $450,000 ABL replaced an overloaded sewage system, consisting of two aged extended aeration packaged plants, with an ABL-SBR capable of a peak flow of 80,000 GPD, and designed for an average flow of 40,000 GPD. The plant consists of two equalization tanks (for influent and effluent), two SBR tanks and disinfection by UV irradiation.

The plant is totally enclosed and architecturally designed to blend in with the resort's natural surroundings. The effluent, which is discharged to the ocean, must meet criteria of less than 30/30 mg/l BOD and SS. Since 1997, the plant has typically been producing effluent better than 15/15 mg/l BOD and SS. ABL operators also provided certification training for the resort's plant operators.
