Landfill Gas Collection and Management
Halifax, Nova Scotia

The Highway 101 Landfill, Nova Scotia, served the Halifax/Dartmouth metropolitan area for 20 years before it was closed in 1997. ABL was responsible for the gas management aspects of the closure. This was the first landfill gas system to be designed and constructed under the Canadian Gas Association Code CAN/CGA B-105 M93, which was extended to cover landfill gas in 1993.

The gas management and flare control building is shown here, with the membrane cover system being installed as part of the closure. Pressure relief vents were installed to prevent damage to the cover. The leachate treatment building and aeration basins, in the background, were also designed by ABL staff.
