Town of Lunenburg - Sewage Treatment
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

The proposal for wastewater treatment prepared by ABL for the picturesque Town of Lunenburg, a UNESCO world heritage site, was selected in an open competition in 1997. The Terms of Reference for this project concentrated on cost, environmental effectiveness and benefits to the community.

The treatment process applied at Lunenburg includes the ABL-Fixed Film Reactor in combination with dissolved air flotation (DAF) clarification and aerobic digestion of solids. The Lunenburg Process is designed to treat wastewater from a combined sewer system with peak flows of 3 MGD (11,500 m3/day) and includes fully enclosed facilities.

Commissioned in March 2003, the treatment plant is exceeding discharge requirements. Total project value: $3.9 million.
