Tire Fire Wastewater Treatment
Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia

In 1999 a fire broke out in the shredded tire pile at the principal tire reycling depot for the Province of Nova Scotia. Firefighters acted quickly to control the fire and it was extinguished after two days. The site was bermed to contain the more than two million gallons of contaminated firefighting wastewater which were generated, containing firefighting foams and levels of BTEX, PAHs and other compounds from pyrolysis of the tires. The prime environmental consultant was considering methods costing in excess of $500,000 for disposal of the wastewater, including trucking approximately 250 kilometers to a treatment site.

ABL, in combination with Rawdon Technologies, offered to test the wastewater using their DAF trailer, for the cost of mobilization. The trailer was equipped with larger filters charged with activated carbon to increase its capacity to 50,000 GPD. After a week of testing the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment approved the process being used and a contract was signed to treat the wastewater using the DAF trailer. The objective was to treat all water to CCME guidelines and to applicable drinking water standards as appropriate.

The trailer was rented to the project at a per diem rate, with ABL's operators manning the plant for continuous 24 hour per day/seven day per week operation. Over a nine week period, more than two million gallons of contaminated wastewater were treated and disposed of within standards acceptable to the regulatory authorities.
