| Treatability Studies Providing Basis for Economic Plant Upgrade Kings County, Nova Scotia | ||

A processing plant in Kings County, Nova Scotia renders offal from poultry into animal feed. The process produces a steam cooking condensate which is very high in BOD, COD and ammonia. The existing 10,000 GPD packaged extended aeration plant was not meeting effluent criteria, and the company had been advised by consultants and equipment suppliers that a new larger plant would be required, at an estimated cost of about $250,000. ABL was retained to investigate the treatability of the wastestream and to confirm the requirement for a new treatment plant. After conducting a benchscale study at ABL's lab, ABL determined that the wastewater could be treated with the existing plant and advised the client to implement minor process changes, at a cost of less than $15,000. ABL provided necessary support and guidance during the initial period of commissioning and training, and the plant has been continuously meeting or exceeding compliance standards. | |
